FM Global advances fire protection, receives ‘Risk Innovator’ award

NORWOOD, Mass., USA—Commercial property insurer FM Global has been recognized for valuable advances in fire suppression by Risk & Insurance magazine, which recently named Dr. Sergey Dorofeev, the company’s fire hazard and protection research area director, a 2013 Risk Innovator.

The award, given annually, recognizes innovators who have demonstrated creativity and excellence in risk management. According to the selection criteria, honorees “see risk differently and have resolved risk-related problems in a unique or innovative way.”

Dorofeev was recognized for leading the FM Global research team that developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) computer model for fire growth and suppression—one that will enable FM Global to more efficiently and cost-effectively help its clients protect their property.

“We want our clients, who are our owners, to have fire protection at the right cost to them,” said Dorofeev. “The use of CFD technology along with real-world tests helps to provide reliable solutions that minimize expenses, operational downtime, supply chain interruption and loss.”

Advantages of CFD computer modeling include the ability to more efficiently develop new solutions, assess customized fire suppression systems for specific facilities, as well as address hazards and scenarios that are difficult to test.

“Ultimately, I think the model developed by Sergey’s team will lead to better standards for risk managers and for the entire industry,” said Dr. Louis Gritzo, FM Global’s vice president of research.

In past years, Risk & Insurance has also recognized the following individuals from FM Global as Risk Innovators:

Dennis Anderson, vice president, manager of engineering application training, for the development of the SimZone, a training center where the company’s engineers and clients can study risk firsthand

Wes Baker, senior engineering technical specialist, for reinventing the way automatic sprinkler systems are designed and installed in warehouses

Karen A. Freedman, vice president, manager of enterprise learning, for major advances in client online training

Dr. Archibald Tewarson, senior research specialist (Ret.), for research resulting in specialized plastics that don’t propagate fire or smoke
