JOHNSTON, R.I., USA, October 26, 2023 – Commercial property insurer FM Global today announced that retired FM Global research scientist Gunnar Heskestad received the Kunio Kawagoe Gold Medal during the 14th International Symposium on Fire Safety Science in Tsukuba, Japan. Heskestad is the 11th winner of the award since its inception in 1994.

Awarded by the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS), the Kunio Kawagoe Gold Medal recognizes lifelong contributions to and career achievements in fire science and engineering. Recipients of the award are recognized for significant and lasting contributions to fire science and engineering through innovation and the impact of their publications, according to the IAFSS, and through their research findings, award winners “frequently led to paradigm shifts in fire regulations, in fire standards and in practical applications of fire safety science and engineering around the world.”
